HD Capacity?

I recently took delivery of a new 20" iMac, 2.4GHz and took the option
of upgrading the HD to 500GB.
Looking at system profiler though, I see that the capacity of my HD is
shown as 465.76GB, with a lesser amount available due to the usual
suspects.
I would have thought that the capacity shown should be 500GB?
Any thoughts or answers?
I have emailed my supplier with this question but no answer yet, so I
thought I'd "ask the audience'
Thanks
Mike

Never is, for the same reason as always

Space between tracks and whether MB is 1024 or 1000 KB etc depending on who
is counting

Indeed, as Andrew said, it never is what you end up with but always less.
In California (where else) there was a class action lawsuit of the issue and
Seagate have agreed to refund 5% of the cost but I bet that wont apply here.

Yeah, I thought that was the case, it just seemed like a lot of wasted space.
That's life I guess.
Thanks for the response guys.
Incidently Nigel, I tried to access the link above but the message was
"cannot find the page" even though the magazine site comes up??

The line-wrap bollocksed up the link and cut off the last 's'.

That will be the return wrap buggering up the URL (see the "s" is on the
next line)
