Emulate right click?

A Mighty Mouse came with my new MacPro (3 gHz quad duo and running
spectacularly well!) but one thing I miss about the old mouse was its
right click (the el cheapo but quite satisfactory Microsoft mouse died
the other day - not quite sure why, but that's another story....)
Anyway, there is no right click on the Mighty Mouse, and I now find it
slightly annoying to have to go back to the keyboard and press the CTRL
key to get right click functions. I went to Mouse in the System
Preferences and was surprised to see that the buttons on the left and
right side of the mouse don't seem to offer a right click function. Does
anyone know how to make them work like right click?  T'would be
handy....

The Mighty Mouse does have a right-click, you set it in the Mouse
prefs pane.  If memory serves it's referred to as "second button".

It also has third and fourth buttons, pressing the centre of the mouse
(where the ball is) and squeezing it respectively.

Matt: thanks for this info. Actually you confused me when you said you
set it in the Mouse prefs pane as I thought that meant going somewhere
other than to System Prefs. Just the terminology that threw me.

What I failed to understand initially, but now do, is that you set the
right side one to "Secondary Button" - it all seems so obvious now.
Interestingly, then you don't need to have a mouse that clearly displays
a right side click - it works by pressure on that side. So, no separate
right click button as such, but it works in exactly the same way when
you click the right side of the mouse. Clever!

Yeah, got that bit, but found myself accidentally getting clicking
results I didn't want.  But you can set it to nil if you like. The
scroll button is magic.

Thanks again.

Except that you have to get it Just Right or you get nothing, or
possibly a left-click.  I've been struggling with a Mighty Mouse
at work lately and absolutely hate it.

The ball is a nice idea but it's too small and fiddly.  I find myself
wishing it had a more "normal" scroll-wheel.

On that note the new iMac keyboard is an abomination too.

Yep, I persevered with one for a while but got absolutely sick of it.
The $19 Logitech replacement is far nicer to use.

Mine stopped working every few minutes.

Hmm...I haven't seen the new keyboards - how different are they to the
older ones?

It's basically a laptop keyboard with gaps between the keys.
It reminds me a bit of the keyboard on the JS/Sega SC-3000 I
had when I was a kid, except the keys are hard plastic rather
than rubber.

I'm finding that my fingers slip off the keys too easily and
the lack of travel doesn't feel quite right.  But I've never
liked laptop keyboards and consider the IBM Model M to be the
gold standard.

Anyone who likes laptop keyboards will probably like these.
I suspect Jobs uses a Macbook Pro and thus felt the need to
inflict this on as many people as possible.

Hmmm....I'll have to have a look to see if any of the new style are in
stock locally.  I need a new keyboard, I actually really liked the white
Mac keyboards from the past couple of years (they finally got one
right), I've just had rather bad luck with them (smashed the first one
to bits when I went arse over carrying it, a box of CDs and an external
CD burner...)

Cheers,
Andy.

I saw them in David Jones at Bondi Junction last weekend so I assume
most Apple stores will have them. I like the look but have not tried the
feel.

What will be announced by Steve Jobs tomorrow? There are rumours of
touchscreen iPods and video nanos but I got an email from my local Mac
reseller today offering big discounts on 17" MacBook Pro so perhaps they
are due for an upgrade as well.

If you don't mind me asking, what constitutes a "big discount"?

That could be VERY interesting.

The reason I ask is I bought mine for $3499 (15% discount) from a Dick Smith
Powerhouse. It was far and away the biggest discount I'd ever seen on a
current-model Apple computer.

That is also the price that Frequency is advertising:

It's only $10 dearer than their price for the 2.4 gHz 15".

Well, I haven't had any trouble with it - it works very well so far with
pressure on the right side of the shell - but then I trained two fingers
to work the buttons of the old mouse and it may help with this mouse
that that is my method. I don't find the buttons at the side very
intuitive at all.

A matter of taste I guess, but the way it works from my point of view
feels really good. Fast scrolling and smooth, and it suits me.

Every Mighty Mouse I have used provided a right click. Just take your
fingers off the left side of the mouse, and then click the shell. Works
fine.

Thanks, Eric - mine wasn't set up for that when it came from the factory
and I didn't quite understand how it worked till Matt provided some
clues and I went to the Apple website.  Works fine now.

It is a no brainer Rifty (lucky for me) you just go to the mouse prefs
and set the side 'buttons' as 'secondary button' and then they work just
like those windows right click buttons

cheers

Yeah I know but the terminology threw me briefly - I was afraid if I
clicked that one I would lose primary mouse function as well, which
happened to me once before - of course that didn't happen - all very
easy after the event - like a lot of things in computing.
