Parallels question

I am told when I open WinXP through Parallels that I need to update the
Parallel Tools. It tells me when I try to do that that this is only
possible if the guest OS is running and "you are logged in."  But logged
in to WHAT? Where? Inside the WinXP system or in the Mac environment? I
can't work that out.

Any ideas?

You need to have Win  XP  (the guest OS) running and with you (not anyone  else) logged in to Win.
Go to lower right of screen and you should see a Parallels tools icon which should pop up. Select
that. Ensure you have latest version of Parallels.

As an aside, do not download Int Explorer 7. It may cause you to have to browser at all.

I use FF instead of course, but IE7 did install and run without any
problems for me. There's a new Parallels out today btw.

Well, I am hoping that that might sort out this problem because although
I did everything as suggested by Graley, it claims to be updating the
tools but nothing happens, and next time I open it I get the same
message about updating the tools. So where are the update files supposed
to be? On the net? Anyway, I will just download a new version and see if
that eliminates the problem.

I use Firefox as my browser for WinXP. The irony in all this is that
there is just one program that I want to use in a PC window because it
is the only platform that makes a particular soundfile conversion.  It
seems to be able to do everything BUT recognise the mp3 player I have
connected through USB!  So I can't make that program work - yet....

Thanks for you info, Sara.

Each version of Parallels so far has had a new set of tools, which seem
to be stored in a hidden disk image that comes with the installer. I had
a similar problem with an earlier version, an uninstall and reinstall of
the tools fixed it.

Thanks for the tip!  However, this is not a music file but voice files
recorded on a little mp3 player that ironically gives a better quality
for recording than any other I have - the only problem is, its files are
in a special format that needs its own tools to convert them to one
that's readable by most sound programs. Worse still, the mp3 player
seems recognisable only on a real PC - I can't make it appear on the
Parallels list of USB devices. If I could, I could do the conversion
withut booting up the WINXP machine - which I rarely use.
