Well, I am hoping that that might sort out this problem because although
I did everything as suggested by Graley, it claims to be updating the
tools but nothing happens, and next time I open it I get the same
message about updating the tools. So where are the update files supposed
to be? On the net? Anyway, I will just download a new version and see if
that eliminates the problem.
I use Firefox as my browser for WinXP. The irony in all this is that
there is just one program that I want to use in a PC window because it
is the only platform that makes a particular soundfile conversion. It
seems to be able to do everything BUT recognise the mp3 player I have
connected through USB! So I can't make that program work - yet....
Thanks for you info, Sara.

Each version of Parallels so far has had a new set of tools, which seem
to be stored in a hidden disk image that comes with the installer. I had
a similar problem with an earlier version, an uninstall and reinstall of
the tools fixed it.

Thanks for the tip! However, this is not a music file but voice files
recorded on a little mp3 player that ironically gives a better quality
for recording than any other I have - the only problem is, its files are
in a special format that needs its own tools to convert them to one
that's readable by most sound programs. Worse still, the mp3 player
seems recognisable only on a real PC - I can't make it appear on the
Parallels list of USB devices. If I could, I could do the conversion
withut booting up the WINXP machine - which I rarely use.
