A friend  copied a bunch of photos onto my external backup drive, not
wishing to use up HD space. The files totalled about 500MB.

Is there a way to use iphoto on the internal drive to see the photos on
the external drive, especially as a slide show ?

there's a program called iPhoto Buddy that lets you switch easily
between multiple iPhoto libraries. See if that resolves your problem.

It seems that I still need to copy photo filles from the ext drive into
the internal drive in a new iPhoto llibrary. So it seems I can't get
around filling my internal drive. ??

I just tested it out with a backup copy of my library on an external
firewire drive. Yes, you are right. Although I can load the library,
iPhoto seems to have trouble moving from photo to photo in the edit
window and the slideshow doesn't work. I haven't tested other features
such as printing. Sorry, looks like you are back to square one.

It was a help though. At least I don't have to wait for ALL the photos
to load after I selected a library. I even read the instructions.
Holding down the option key at launch was a great idea.
