G4 woes with Tiger

With a 867 G4, I installed Tiger and a new Seagate 120GB drive at same
time. Before then I had an old Maxtor HD which never had troubles. Have
had troubles ever since installing the Seagate (and Tiger). System not
found. System loads part way thro then freezes.  Several shutdowns and
restarts seem to fix whatever it is. Have repaired disk, rebuilt
directory and permissions. All to no avail. Have even zapped PRAM.

Once system starts, everything works fine.

Have re-installed all software to be OS 10.4 compatible. Have downloaded
all updates from Apple.

Frustration reigns. Any ideas most welcome. (Other than never turn it
off, and re-install the old Maxtor) Have tried those. But have to turn
it off sometime.

Some thoughts that might help.

So from your last comment I take it you have put Tiger on the old Maxtor
drive and it is OK?  It sounds more like a hard drive installation issue or
maybe some RAM went bad in the process (knocked or whatever).  If you have
diskwarrior start from that and see what it says re your disk.  Also use
disk repair on the Tiger CD (starting from that CD).  That will take care of
any disk directory structure or bad blocks etc but it wont fix any bigger
disk hardware issues.  Can you not have both the disks installed at once
perhaps?

I did just add a new stick of RAM recently. Will check. I did not put
Tiger on the maxtor. The Tiger install disk refused to do it saying that
failure was expected for that drive. is this a sales gimmick ?

Ah yes, important details you left out of your original post.

The RAM could be a problem.

And no, it's not a sales gimmick, if the tiger installer is getting errors
when it checks the target hdd, then it's normal to reject it.

My suggestion would be to find someone you know with experience
in installing hdds and memory, and get them to do it properly.

Is the new Seagate the only hard disk in the system? Did you set the HD's
jumper to CableSelect or to Master? My 800 G4 (Quicksilver) wants the disk
set to master but my other G4 (Mirror Drive Door) wants it set to Cable
Select - check the G4's user manual.

RAM and  Tiger were originaly installed by an authorised Apple
serviceman. Seagate is the only disk. Seagate US advised to set jumper
in master position.

You said that you installed Tiger onto the new seagate hdd?

Time to take the G4 back to someone who does this for a living.

When the Seagate was first installed the Apple tech set it up. It ran
three days and then failed. I had big job to do so he told me to put the
Maxtor back in. The G4 then went OK for a week. I then put the Seagate
back in under his instruction, and it failed again. That was what I
meant by "I installed..". The tech does not believe there is anything
wrong with the drive. Just something in my software.

Next move is to ignore what Seagate said about the master jumper
position and try the cable select position. No clues from G4 manual yet.
I thought I had it made after downloading the latest Safari 2.0.1 which
optimised the system and required a restart. Unusual. But no go.

And thanks to all for help. I will not be beaten by a mere machine.

Right, so is this tech from a regular apple store? That really is an attrocious
attitude to take towards your problem. 3 days into use and it fails, he should
have fixed it on his dime...

This is why I buy my hdds from well-regarded PC dealers that do a decent volume
in hdds, so I'm not getting something that's been sitting on a shelf in the back room
for 3 months until the apple dealer can flog it off onto someone...

If a hard drive is stuffing up 3 days into use, it should have been replaced with a new one
on the spot.
