Sorry for butting in without lurking a bit first but I am hoping that
somebody may be able to help me with this BoG (Box of Gubbings).

I am running an old (5 years) iMac that was given to me by my brother after
I killed my pc. This is a great BoG but I heve no manual with it. It keeps
asking me to allocate more memory to Internet Explorer when I oppen up flash
programs. Being as thick as a brick and not wanting to disrupt the thing by
fididling about too much can anybody explain how to do this please?

I am using Mac OS Z1-9.0.4 , Mac OS ROM4.6.1, built in memory 192mb, virtual
memory 996 on Macintosh HD,largest unused block 903.8 mb and a 30 gig
harddrive.

I hope that make some sort of sence.

Thanks in advance.

G'day

Don't be sorry - asking questions is a good approach.

This is the way to do it for all Mac applications. Select the
application (one click), then press the apple key & the 'I' key
simultaneously. This will bring up the info box. From there, it is
fairly obvious - just increase the amount of RAM to be assigned to the
application.

I suggest that you update the OS to 9.2 - it will run much smoother.
Going to OSX may not be your best bet unless you increase your RAM. If
you want 9.2 - and can't download it, I am sure that someone will help out.

ALSO - if there is a Mac User Group (MUG) nearby, get in touch & join
up. You will be surprised at how much help you will get from local Mac
Users.

Don't be backward in coming forward - ask for help anytime.

Thanks for the help. I have tried to upgrade to OS X from disk but due to my
system being so old It wouldn't load due to me being about 2 upgrades behind
with the one I am using! The whole BoG suffered a compleat sence of humor
failure and the only thing it would do ,AFTER I got the disk out of the
nevertobesuficentlydamd thing was a gray screen with the words (IIRC)" You
may panic now." Any help in upgradeing would be appreciated.

I have upped the RAM to the max via the control panel I hope that this will
work.

You may have noticed that I am not the most computer literate person, I have
a hate/hate relationship with the thing, so everything has to be explained
in very,vert simple terms.

Hi Rory,

First off, using the memory control panel to up the virtual memory is
not enough to install OS X - you need real RAM, not virtual memory.

Also, setting the virtual memory so high in Mac OS 9 is not a good idea,
either - it will just make the machine sluggish as you open more
applications.

The Get Info (Apple-I) thing will work only with the actual application,
not a shortcut/alias to it. If the icon has a little curly arrow on it
and an italic name, the Get Info thing won't work - you'll need to click
on the Internet Explrorer icon which doesn't have the little arrow or
italic name and Get Info on that. You can usually find the application
in the "Applications" folder (or sometimes "Applications (Mac OS 9)"
depending on your OS 9 version and where the update to OS X got).

Also, you'll need to change the little popup menu in the Get Info window
from General Information to Memory, and just change the last number. Oh,
and you can't change it while the application is running.

You may need to boot up from an OS 9 CD and then use the Startup Disk
Control Panel to change back to OS 9 until you get more RAM.

Hope that's of use

Sean

Ok not a clue what that means!

Yes I have just found that out

I have tried befor and the BoG went tit's up, not going to try again yet as
it all (mostly) works.

I had to go back into the original items folder which holds all my pre crash
stuff (please don't ask me how or I will start to whimper) and get the info
from the original ( I think) instalation.

I have done the sensible thing and set it back to how it was when it was all
running!

Another  quick question. I am using Outlook Depressed to get this newsgroup
how do I get rid of all the posts that never seam to get downloaded from the
server. Having the little black numbers bugs the hell out of me.

Thanks again.

Hi Rory,

Don't panic, consider this a learning curve. You'll have a lot less hassle with the
imac in the long run than a pc. Take your time and follow the advice being given.
I've found this group an invaluable help to me.

BTW, where are you located if that's not too much to ask.

Then don't worry about that for now. Simply, if you want to upgradeto OS X (OS Ten),
then you need at least 256mb of Ram, but 512bmb is better.

An alias is mac speak for a shortcut (PC speak), the Get Info command is different
to virtual memory as explained earlier in this thread.

Thanks for the encouragement. I am not realy stupid except when it comes to
computers! I follow instructions but it always seams that the contents of
the window I open doesn't  match the contents of the helpers window so click
this becomes "were is it you ***** **** **************** ***heap of rancid
********* *** ****" usually followed by a session of loud heavy rock to
de-stress myself.

Mushroom clouds have been known to erupt over South Somerset (West Coker to
be excact), Great Britain after a particullaly unsuccessfull attempt at
doing something.

Just think Rory not every Pom can find himself an Aussie Mac group,so
you've done very well so far. ;-)
This is a good thing though as there are some nice people here who are
sure to be of help.Speaking of help don't forget to refer to the
"HELP"up there in the menu at the top,it will walk you through most
things, very helpful for a new Mac user.
I don't want this to sound rude but when I first bought a Mac I
found"Mac for Dummies"very useful it explains the workings of the Mac in
a very logical way in everyday language, you may even get a copy
secondhand.
Good luck I hope you end up enjoying your Mac as much as the rest of us
do.

When you do this, you should allocate at least 20MB to Explorer.
