KVM for Macs?

G'day,

Thought I'd ask in here, since this seems like a likely spot:

I could use a KVM for two Macs... even a simple KVM with two ports would
suffice if the price is right.
Can anyone recommend a cheapish brand that works well with Macs?

While I'm at it, what of the upper end of the market?
I could also use a 4-6 port KVM that can support *both* Macs & PCs, at
the same time I mean.
I'm assuming such a beast'll be out of my price range at the moment, but
no harm in asking.

Many Thanks :)

Hubby bought one for home a while back so I asked and this is his response
-------------

Yup, we have at home a Kessington (I think?) 2 port USB/SVGA KVM. Which of
course supports all modern macs and PCs.

I think it was $100-200.

4 and 8 port and more are available. All he needs to know is as long as both
his macs and PCs use USB and VGA style video then he should be ok. He should
check to make sure that the KVM supports higher resolution, some of them
don't support above 1024 x 768 etc.

just depends on how many computers and what price he is willing to spend.
---------------

Hope that helps :)

It sure did, many thanks indeed for your reply... I'll save it for
future reference, as I've just ordered the belkin 2 port jobbie from
apple, which will suffice for now.
I eventually plan to get one big KVM that'll handle up to say 6 PCs and
Macs. Thanks again :)

I just noticed a special bundle offer at the Apple store for Belkin KVM and 4-outlet surge supressor
for $89.95.

Thanks Jason, I have ordered this one as it'll do the job for the time
being...
and the price is right (from apple's store no less - shock horror ;)

Does anyone know how fast they generally dispatch orders?

And that would be the US site perhaps?

It is, but I buy a lot of stuff from overseas in my job.

In my experience lack of stock overseas means late deliveries here as
they fulfill home market orders first. Very few companies seem to treat
their export markets as anything other than second best

Still, your experience isn't facts.

Companies like Belkin seem to have plenty of stock out here...

And of course, for Apple to be promoting it, they probably have secured
a fair bit of stock already, considering it includes a 4-outlet surge protector
which is for the australian market...

Just an update:

It arrived yesterday... so theres no delay with stock or whatever. Quick
response and despatch.

Initial impressions are somewhere between satisfied and 'meh' with the
product itself.

Image quality seems okay, I think... the image quality seems to be a tad
poorer than before, but that could well be my imagination. I'll need to
try it again with just the monitor to confirm this.

One annoyance is that it is fairly slow at switching between machines in
that if you switch to one and want to quickly go back to the other one, it
can take several seconds before it'll respond to any switching command.
(it just took 20 seconds just then). Also, it takes a few secs for the
mouse to 'wake up'.

The supplied software is relatively
useless, as the manual says it's only for windows - right after boasting
in the preceeding paragraph that windows, Linux and OSX are all supported
:)

The problem with this is that you are forced to use the switch on the KVM
itself - which wouldn't be so bad except that there are obviously leads at
both ends of the unit, so there is no easy or tidy way to set it up.

BUT... it DOES work... And for $80 or so, you gets what ya pays for,
right? ;)
