Hi all,
My wife's mother has an iBook running OS X 10.3 and is interested in
getting into internet telephony via Skype. The indigo iBook lacks a
microphone, and in trying to pick up a USB microphone it occurred to me
I should go the whole hog and get a webcam with a microphone so she can
try iChat or something like it.
Looking into webcams it's often difficult to figure out whether they're
OS X compatible - half the Logitech range use a driver that only works
properly with 10.2, for instance.
I know there are a few open source drivers but they may be rather high
maintenance for what I have in mind.
So can anyone recommend, or even sell me, a webcam that will work with
her machine? FireWire and USB 1.1 are the ports available.
Thanks for any help,
Matthew.

That's a good price, but when you consider that a headset solution is going
to cost about half the price of an isight (I don't know if there's edu pricing)
then it still makes sense to get an isight :)

I can get Logitech webcams under $40 - some work with Jaguar but the
Panther compatible ones are more expensive.

Use a digital video camera via a firewire 4-6 pin cable. I've used that
successfully as a mic/video source in the past.

Nice idea! Does it work as a general mic input - i.e. can you select it
in the Sound preference setting?

Good question...I don't think it does actually, but have a go and check, I
only hooked it up for video.
My old plaintalk mic doesn't fit my G5 :(

OP should realise that video chat on iChat has some hardware
requirements. And the indigo iBook's spec is too low for iChat to
support the video function natively. However, video support can be
added using a 3rd party add-on software (iChatUSBCam). It works but the
result may be a little choppy as you get further away from Apple's
basic spec.
Given the circumstance, I'd suggest that the OP should go and check as
to which USB cameras are supported by iChatUSBCam on
<http://www.ecamm.com/>.

Good thinking there; my webcam interest was really to get a microphone
into the USB port without having to use an iMic. But the webcam thing
may not be a go on her hardware. Thanks for the advice.
Cheers, MK.

For a microphone alone I'd recommend the MicFlex
http://www.macsense.com.au/micflex_usb.htm
I use a JVC DV Camcorder via Firewire for video and audio input on
iVisit and iChat and it works fine.
Friends have the Logitech Orbit (cam, mic and motion sensor built in)
and that woks fine with iVisit but I can't say about iChat.
