I had the same problem the instant I updated to 10.3.9 from 10.3.8. Nothing
in Software Update seemed to fix the problem either. Formatted and went to
10.4.1 and all is well. Might be as simple as trashing prefs, but I think
it was Java related, used to keep getting the beachball, drove me nuts.
