Hi,
I want to upgrade the hard drive in my G5 iMac. Can I put the present drive
(SATA) into a standard 3.5 external case to use for backups etc? You can buy
them pretty cheaply.
All advice is greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

Well , not really, they take ide drives

You can get a sata case from try & byte but you would need to get a sata
card as there is no external sata port on a g5

I would be better to leave both drives in the g5, or not worry about the
smaller drive anymore

Oops, just read its an imac not a tower, so no u cant use it at all, just
keep it as a paperweight or sell it to someone with a more expandable model.
You can use it in a pc as well if it has a sata bus... Lots do now :)

Actually, there are cases that can take SATA drives, although they're pretty hard to find

e.g.

http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=17-146-256&depa=0

It would be a *LOT* cheaper for him to use buy a 200GB or larger IDE hdd and put it in a firewire case.

Yes there are cases for sata drives, but you would need an external sata pci
card to use them, which wont work in an imac. If there are any sata to
firewire bridges I have not heard of them

Most people are using serial ata cards to hook up the drives in cases
without a bridge, this gives them the full  SATA speed, ie for wide DV
editing

But I can see the uses for the bridged cases and im sure they would be fast
enough for most users, including me. However it probably halves the
performance (that's a guess)

Jason - the man with no feet. He's shot himself in them so many times
there is nothing left.
You really should shut up and listen to people like Andrew who know what
they are talking about.

You talk drivel and can't resist dropping the hint that you have a G7
triple processor with a 10 googlebyte drive .

Jason - nobody cares about you or your comments that don't contribute to
the thread. You're more than likely a dropkick with an LC111 and a
severe inferiority complex.

The only hope you have of reusing it with your iMac would be with
a firewire case that takes a SATA drive inside.

Here's an example of one...

Well there you go ! There is one, I may have to try this & see if its any
faster in the real world than an ide/fw400   or ide/fw800 bridge
Of course this will work for the original poster too !

Cheers andrew
