Ref my previous problem on not being able to burn CDs from ITunes it was
suggested that I reinstall iTunes.

I downloaded a latest version and trashed every vestige of the past
version, app, plists, plug ins etc. and restarted.

The download, after many attempts says that iTunes install is disabled
because a newer version is already installed.

I have spoken to the local Apple centre and Apple OZ. No advice other
than trash all components of the previous app. Well, I have done that
but the new download somehow detects that my old version, which was ver
4.7.1 is still there.

Any ideas very welcome.

Did you trash the package under /Library/Receipts ?

No I did not. I just found receipts in OSX in Library and dumped the
lot, and iTunes loaded OK.  Many thanks

I think you need to go to your hard disk in finder -> library-> Receipts and
delete the itunes pkg there.  This folder tracks what is already installed
and that is what it is seeing.  Try that and reinstall.

Yes. I trashed all the receipts ( I hope that was a good thing to do)
and the newly downloaded Itunes installed OK. Many thanks

Not really.  There's now no record of what versions of software are
installed on your Mac.  If you try Software Update it'll probably give
you a list of everything - because it doesn't know what you have
installed.  Try to recover the recepits from your backups and replace
them (except the old iTunes one, of course).

Thanks for the info, but having been caught before I MT the trash only
weekly, and so recovered all. Nearly though.

But the reason for all this...inability to burn a CD from
iTunes...remains. Still can't, and have been advised to try to find soft
ware called Powermac combo drive updater, or similar. So far can't find
but am perservering.

Try downloading PatchBurn from versiontracker maybe.  Do you have an
aftermarket burner?

I dont now what aftermarket means. The burner (CD-RW and DVD-R) is built
into the  silver G4 tower.

I do not like iTunes for burning.

Try downloading BurnX Free or Dragon Burn.  Both are very easy to use.

Dragon Burn will give you 10 (ten) free goes before you have to register.
It can do nine different types of CD/DVD burns.

Hope this helps.

Thanks Bill will try. Downloaded patchburn but got message "No need to
patch. Mac OSX already supports".

I tried BurnX free and Dragon burn. Both failed with error "device
failed to respond properly" or "command error". I think I have sick
drive or sick Mac system software. But thanks to all, guys.

You can buy a brand new magnificent DVD-R/RW CD-R/RW burner, the Pioneer DVD-109 for
around $110-120. Highly recommended.

Thanks Jason. I could not find DVD 109, but found DVR 109, but the
Pioneer site says it is not Mac compatible. I am on the verge of taking
the Mac to a repair shop and just giving in.

Yes, the DVR-109. And it works perfectly inside a Mac tower or externally in a firewire enclosure.

Which Mac do you have?

Then you should have no trouble replacing the dud burner with a Pioneer DVR-109 :)

I have a DVR 109 here, works fine with Toast 6.0.7 (and probably 6.0.9 when
I get around to updating).
