What is PHP?
PHP is a script language and interpreter that is freely available and
used primarily on Linux Web Servers. PHP, originally derived from
Personal Home Page Tools, now stands for PHP: Hypertext Preprocessor,
which the PHP FAQ describes as a "recursive acronym."

PHP is an alternative to Microsoft's Active Server Page (ASP)
technology. As with ASP, the PHP script is embedded within a Web page
along with its HTML. Before the page is sent to a user that has
requested it, the Web Server calls PHP to interpret and perform the
operations called for in the PHP script.

An HTML page that includes a PHP script is typically given a file name
suffix of ".php" ".php3," or ".phtml". Like ASP, PHP can be thought of
as "dynamic HTML pages," since content will vary based on the results of
interpreting the script.

PHP is a widely-used general-purpose scripting language that is
especially suited for Web development as it can be embedded into HTML.

As stated before, php files are scripts, but sometimes when you download
files the file name of the downloaded file is the name of the script
used to download the file and not the name of the original actual file.
What was it you were downloading and which browser were you using?

The 'file' utility may give you some clues as to what the file is.

Open a terminal window, change to the directory containing the unknown
file and type :

file whatever.php

Right. But where do I find the "file" utility?

You don't need to 'find' it, it should be on the path, so when you start
the terminal and type 'file whatever.php' , 'file' will get run.

'file' is not a GUI application, it is a command line tool.

It happens to be in /usr/bin/file

I'd guess that what's happening is the content type is set incorrectly
at the server end. Try another browser (Firefox, Camino, Mozilla) if you
have access to one or alternately mail the site admin.

Cheers, Robert.

Just drop it onto Stuffit Expander, if it is compressed or a disk image then
Stuffit will decompress it or mount it.  What browser are you using?  I find
Explorer does this a lot.  Try Safari or Firefox.

Stuffit does not recognise it. suggests that teachtext might open it as
it is not compressed.
It won't
