I have Itunes as part of Ilife 05. Until a few days ago I could burn a
playlist no prob to a CD-R. Now suddenly it does not work. Using G4 with
OS 10.3.8
iTunes prepares the blank OK and sets up the files to burn, starts to
burn the first track, then ejects the disk with MacOS error, or unable
to complete error.
I have tried different brands of CD from different boxes (mostly
Imation) but the result is the same.
I even tried Toast 6 in disk copy and audio file mode, But that got me
"Unable to complete burn due error.." again and again. All I am doing is
feed blanks into his thing.
Maybe the "writer" is at fault, but do not know how to fix.
Any ideas welcome.

If you can remember the exact words in the error alert, it would help.
If it has a number or a reason for the error then that problem may be
easily rectified.

I just tried iTunes again. Error msg was:
"The attempt to burn a disk failed. The device failed to respond
properly, unable to recover or retry".

It appears you are not alone. If you have a look on the Apple
discussions group for iTunes (apple.com --> support --> discussions -->
itunes), lots of people have been having similar problems with iTunes
4.7.1, both in Mac Os and Windows. Some have suggested changing the
brand of disks helps (but I see you have tried that). Others have
suggested a new burner. It may however be that iTunes is the culprit.
Can't offer any other advice.

I am a bit confused, you say you have tried Toast in disk copy mode? so you
are trying to copy from disc to disc?...try making a Toast image of the disc
and then burn that in Toast (SIMULATION MODE) or copy the tracks to the HD
and then drag to Toast in audio mode, also try slowing the burn speed down
to 8 or 16 what speed was you trying? what burner do you have? how is it
connected? info, info, info!

I used audio mode and dragged tracks to teh window at "best speed". Will
trey slowing it down. Yes, I tried to make disk copy of the original CD,
which gave similar error message. Cannot complete. Will try as you say
to make Toast image.
