Hi all

I noted a couple of posts concerning Suncorp Metway's terms and conditions
so I followed them up.

I e-mailed (apologies to the poster I swiped the third Para from)

   Subject:    Suitable Software

Could you kindly advise your reasons for limiting access to your
Internet banking to 'suitable software' defined as meaning

Internet Explorer 5.5 Service Pack 2 or above, or Netscape Navigator 6.1 or
above running on Windows 98/Me/NT/2000/XP with anti-virus software  or other
software approved by us.

I appreciate you are interested in reducing losses due to phishing, but in
doing so you have mandated the very software whose lousy security is
primarily responsible for those losses.

Thanks in advance

I got the following response. Granted they think that the Apple Mac is
software :-) but they are not shutting us out. I know the ranters in the
group won't be satisfied until they include a list of all known browsers but
I'll respond with a nice thank you

Dear -----,

Thank you for your email.

Please note that Suncorp supports additional software to that currently
listed in the Terms and Conditions of the Suncorp Internet Banking service.

The Terms and Conditions have been worded as a short list of the most common
types of software plus "or other software approved by us".  The reason for
this is that the full list is quite long, and it changes frequently.

The Apple Mac, Linux, and Mozilla among others, all constitute approved
software.

If there is anything further I can assist you with, please do not hesitate
to contact me anytime.

Regards,

----

That's good news, but confusing.

I called Suncorp yesterday and they told me the exact opposite, that
Mac was NOT supported.

Perhaps they have backflipped?

Or maybe the person I spoke to (who put me on hold to check with a
superior) just made a mistake?

Well I have an e-mail from Suncorp Metway which says it is approved.

I posted the e-mail to this newsgroup, it has a date and time.

Two things are clear from the e-mail

1.  A mac is fine
2.  They haven't got a clue what they are talking about :-)

However before someone sends a written advice in a bank they normally clear
it with someone to make sure it's right because if it's not it is going to
turn around an bit them on the bum!

Your phone conversation - I'd suggest the person you spoke to just didn't
check it out.

If they claim that it's not approved I'm covered. (Not that I'm going to get
phished - I am on a Mac)

Some suggestions

If you are a Suncorp Metway user  I would suggest you e-mail them. Nicely. I
would think 50 e-mails from their clients would be enough for them to
consider amending their t & c s.

Don't e-mail them to complain if you are not a customer I have to deal with
non customers rants from time to time where I work, we have a technical term
we use to describe these people.

Don't stop banking with Suncorp Metway if they do support the Mac otherwise
when they review their logs they get 0 usage of other browsers and justify
their decision.

If they stop supporting the mac do stop banking with them. When you close
the account send an e-mail to their GM cc in their IT head. Banks HATE
losing business second only to hating their IT people

I know, I was responding to your post.

I have now been told over the phone the exact same information as in
the email excerpt you posted.

Suncorp appear to have backflipped --- or maybe it was all just a SNAFU.

On monday 24th I was told over the phone that Windows + MS-IE or
Netscape Navigator was the only suitable platform.     The operator to
whom I spoke even placed me on hold to consult a superior.

After reading your post on Tuesday evening, I resolved to call and ask
again.

I've just spoken to Suncorp again, and this time they confirmed that
MacOs, /is/ on their "other software approved by us" list.  They could
offer no explanation as to why I was told the opposite earlier in the
week.

Crisis over, I guess.

Great to see they finally got on the same page.

I sent a follow up email suggesting that if the list was long they might
want to include a list. They responded by saying it would be too long a
list!
