sometimes when I download something from the net on Versiontracker or
such I get reams of symbols rather than an item. I presume these are
binaries.
How do i ocnvert these to use in my iMac?

when you see this happening in your browser, stop the transfer
immediately, then go back to the original link and rightclick (if you
have a 2-3 button mouse) or control-click to get at the context menu and
then choose "save link as".  you ought to get the download started
properly that way.

As for your question about conversion...  I don't think you can.

Can't you just change the file name suffix? Given that most of these
files are stuffed, dropping onto StuffIt Expander often helps.

If it's a short file then you can save it as text and Expander often can
deal with it. But if it is megabytes long, that gets a bit messy.
