Burning 4x media at 8x

Hi all, I have a Pioneer 108 DVD burner in my G5 and bought a spindle of 50
Shintaro DVD blanks, labelled as 8x.  Unfortunately Toast 6.0.5 only lets me
burn them at 4x.  When I try some JVC 8x rated blanks they are recognised as
8x and burn at 8x fine.  Is there any way to force Toast to burn the discs
at 8x?  I don't know if I can take the discs back as I have used 5 or so of
them.

Thanks :)

might.

I bought a spindle of Shintaro when I bought my Pioneer burner - they
are cheapies, actually Princos.  But of course I didn't know that then.

Mixed results - some burn OK, some are coasters - 50/50 I guess.  I will
never buy them again though

If we're not supposed to eat animals, why are they made out of meat?

They all burn OK for me, but they read back a lot slower than the Apple
other other branded ones.  Might give 6.0.7 a go!  Thanks :)

I can heartily recommend Taiyo Yuden DVD-Rs.

Others swear by Ritek. Princos and Shintaros (which are just Princos) are a distant 3rd.

TDKs are good too, because they're made by Taiyo Yuden.

Hmm sounds like I might need to go farther afield than JB Hifi for my DVD
blanks ;)  Where is a cheap place to source Taiyo Yuden blanks?

There's an app on Versiontracker which tells you the true brand of your
blanks, quite handy.

They sell for $68 per spindle of 50 here in QLD. Whereabouts are you?

I'm in Newcastle, NSW.

The app is called DVD Media Inspector.  I might have got it from
xlr8yourmac.com.

I use "record" brand which I bought from the computer swap meet in
melbourne, they were 8x write for $45. I don't have any problems or
complaints about them and willing to buy from them again.

I think it is just a problem with the media or how it is labelled.  Toast
6.0.7 lets me burn 8x rated JVC media at 12x, so it DOES support winding up
the speed, but on the Princo/Shintaro "8x" media it only allows 4x.

I stopped buying Shintaro DVD-Rs months ago when I discovered they were just Princos
remarketed.

btw, umart.com.au in brisbane and sydney have cheap Ritek DVD-Rs.
