Permissions for writing to external HD

Just connected an MPD (SI-2163/64) 200 gig external hard disk to my old G4
running OS 10.3.5. I was expecting to use this to port large files between
my home Mac and the work PC.
I was able to write some files to this disk from the PC but when I tried to
write from my Mac I found that I had read-only permission. 'Get info'
'Ownership & permissions' for the disk tells me 'You can only read' with no
options for changing. I can read OK from the disk.
'Get Info' also tells me that the format is 'Windows NT File System'. Is
this the problem?

I have done some looking around on the web with no success. I shall continue
looking for a solution but perhaps someone out there knows the answer.

TIA

Yes it is! NTFS in all of its variants is currently Read-only. If you want a
portable HD to have the most out of the box compatability, format it as
FAT32.

This can be read by OSX, Windows(duh!) and Linux

Wow, that was quick. Thanks john in sydney.

How come, then, I was able to write to it from the PC at work (I have to
admit I didn't notice which Windows version is installed - post '98 anyway -
lack of interest in PC stuff, I guess). Does it mean the work comp is NT?

Thanks again.

Yes, of one variant or another. NTFS is owned by Microsoft, and they guard
the specs to the format extremely zealously!

OK. I reformatted in MS-DOS File System using Disk Utility and everything's
fine here. Should be OK for the work PC I guess.

Thanks binky

When you format in FAT32 in DOS, how large a partition can you make?

You really didn't look very far :D

http://www.google.com/search?q=OS+X+NTFS&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8

While 10.3.5 has 'better support' for NTFS, it's still read-only access, which really BLOWS :(

If the files aren't super-huge, although, if you needed a 200GB drive, they sound like they
might be large audio/video files, you could consider burning to CD or DVD as an alternative.
