Microtek ScanWizard and 8.6

I have a Microtek V300 scanner.  I upgraded my Mac from 8.1 years ago
but have never been able to get ScanWizard to run with 8.6 or 9.1.

When I click "preview" in Scanwizard, my desktop clock stops until I use
a keyboard combination to force the graphics application to quit.

Microtek called that a system crash and sent me a checklist for
troubleshooting the installation of their latest recommended ScanWizard.
It didn't help, but the old Scanwizard still works with OS 8.1.

Any ideas?

Which version of Scanwizard is that?

It's 3.24.3.

The one that works, when I change to OS 8.1, is 3.1.2.

I'm using Scanwizard 3.0.7, (works for a bunch of scanners, and
hopefully yours?) which has run AOK for me on everything from 7.5.3 up
to 9.1. Check your mail, and keep your fingers crossed.

Check my mail?

The problem seems to be the extension SM-V300 V1.2.2 PPC, which came
with 3.2.2 and 3.24.  If I substitute the older SM-V300 V1.2.0 PPC, the
other software from those updates seems to work fine.

I wonder if SM-V300 V1.2.2 has ever worked with a V300.  The scanner
requires about 1.3 MB of sofeware, but they make you download a 10.7 MB
package that installs a long list of extensions for other scanners.  The
next time you use your scanner, the plugin will check your extensions
folder and discard the extensions it thinks you don't need. It's a waste
of download time and disk space, and the consumer is in the dark.

If your scanner won't run, one troubleshooting suggestion is that some
unknown extension may have prevented the installation of some Microtek
software.  Instead of leaving you to wonder about that, wouldn't it be
more to the point to tell you what Microtek software should have been
installed?  If in fact the updated extension has never worked, would
Microtek tell us?

IIRC this is the scanner driver, but maybe not; I haven't
wrestled with this in years.

It's not a very good system.

The installers aren't very good. Again, from long ago I
recall that I needed to delete everything related to the
installation when trying different versions of the software.
If there were five versions of the software, one worked and
the others never did.

Depending on the OP's interests and resources, this is one
problem that might be best fixed by moving on with a new
scanner and software, and possibly OS upgrade. This is
always my least favorite solution, but sometimes it's the
best.

Microtek calls the whole Scanwizard package the driver.  I suppose it
could all be considered the code for a particular peripheral device.

In your Extensions folder they put SM-V300 V1.2.2 PP and a lot of
extensions for other scanners.  Later, they move those other extensions
to the Microtek folder in Preferences!  In your Extensions folder they
also put a Chooser extension for your scanner, but it works fine without
that extension.

The two big files, about 1 MB each, are Scanwizard PPC Twain (in the
Twain folder in Preferences) and theScanwizard plugin, which it installs
in ColorIt.  If you want to acquire a scan through another graphics
application, you must find that plugin.

In addition, it creates files that might be called preferences all over
your disks.  If your computer crashes, you are supposed to find and
delete those files.  A list would be handy.  So would keeping them in
one folder.

My computer won't upgrade to OSX.  It was upgrading to newer Scanwizards
as Microtek instructed that did me in.  With 8.1, 8.6, and 9.1,
everything works fine if I go back to the SM-V300 extension I first used
with OS 7.6.

What I wonder is whether SM-V300 V1.2.2 ever worked for anybody.

There's plenty of bad advice like that available.

Then that's a great (and familiar sounding) solution. IIRC
there was one release (or one version of the driver) that
worked most of the time and I tried to stick with that.

Probably. Although the configurations might have been very
specific (e.g. on a SuperMac or something).

The ScanMaker and ScanWizard series of, ahem, upgrades were
a really awful patch. I don't miss that sort of stuff at all.
