Hi,
I got the new version of iTunes today and set it up to work with my
previously subscribed casts. I had been using PodCastTuner by having
it download to a Podcast Tuner playlist in iTunes. From there I had a
smart play list that pulled 250 meg of unplayed casts out of the
Podcast Tuner list and then I update my shuffle from that. This worked
well and as I listened to tunes it would drop them off the list and I
could delete them. (thanks Dave Slusher EGC for the design).
With 4.9 iTunes can now subscribe directly to the podcasts and it
stores them in Podcasts under their subscription. I thought great, all
I have to do now is redirect my smart playlist to grab 250 meg of
podcasts from there and I just continue as I had been going.
But there are two problems with this, first Podcasts is not a
playlist (I guess) since I cannot set it as a source in my smart play
list. Second you are supposed to use an option in iTunes to have it
update the podcasts in your iPod. (Set which Podcasts are copied to
your iPod:) But the shuffle doesn't support this so that way is out
till we get 4.10 or 4.9a.
Right now I am selecting all the podcasts in Podcasts and picking
New Playlist from Selection under File. Then that play list I set as
the source in my smart pod filling list. The problem is this created
list is static, I will have to re-create it every time new podcasts are
uploaded.
Any suggestions or am I missing something ?

I've got another question.. how do I remove this lame 'podcasts'
addition to the left side menu in iTunes? I have no interest in
podcasts and all the other cheesy buttons on the left have the option
of being removed (party shuffle, radio stations, etc).
One of the main reasons I use iTunes is the modular, customizable
layout. Most companies force certain revenue generating options on you
- but Apple allowed the user to turn the 'store' links off. They got
major points for that one. So why force this podcasts thing on me? I
liked that my left menu showed my library and network playlists only.

A recent post on MacInTouch suggests that you can make a smart playlist
selecting songs with genre "Podcast".
Acording to that post, the podcasts won't show up in that playlist in
iTunes, but they will appear in it when transferred to an iPod.
Good luck.
