Something called Password Manager pops up a screen from time to time,
offering to save a password I'm entering. But how do I get at the file
it maintains, to review or edit it?
(I'm on a single-user system that I own. I assume I'm normally logged
in as that user, but I don't believe I've ever actually seen a login
screen or tried becoming "root" and have no knowledge how to do so if
that's what's needed.)
Thanks . . .

This is a Firefox or possibly a more general Mozilla thing.

You can review the contents by going to the Saved Passwords section of
the Privacy preferences in Firefox. The file won't be in a form that
you could view or edit with an ordinary text editor.

That depends on the web browser you are using. "Password Manager"
sounds like the one that's built in to Mozilla and Firefox, and I don't
know where it stores that information. Other Mac browsers, including
Safari and Camino, store their passwords in the Keychain, and Keychain
Access.app will let you inspect what they have stored.

Thanks for this and other replies.
Yes, where it happens is in Netscape 7.0, which I understand to be built
on Mozilla(?).
And no, the Keychain doesn't seem to be involved.
Guess it's not editable (though I'll dig into Netscape documentation.)

In Netscape look under the Tools->Password Manager menu item

Duh! Sorry about that. Helpful answers can come back so quickly and
easily on a newsgroup that I'm tempted to just post before thinking or
doing adequate testing for myself, and that's just what happened here.
