X11 1.1 (Tiger) and Java Swing

The X11 that comes with Tiger seems to have difficulty displaying at
least some remote Java Swing clients running in Linux.  What I'm seeing
is that the frame comes up at the smallest possible size, ignoring the
size specified by the client, and when expanded to a more reasonable
size show nothing at all.  The same Java client running on the same host
displays fine in Panther X11.  Fwiw the Linux box is running Java 1.4.2
and the X11 connection is through ssh.  Other X11 clients on the Linux
box (xterm, emacs, etc) work perfectly well in Tiger X11.

Anyone else seen this?

More info on this problem:

- It goes away if the remote client is connected directly rather than
 through ssh.

- I've now replicated it with several Swing applications.  In fact I've
yet to see a Swing app that displays properly via ssh, though only
some show the initial sizing problem.  All seem fine with a direct X11
 connection.
