Why does Classic startup hang in Tiger for me?

I had Panther on one partition and OS 9.2.2 on another. I could start
up in 9.2.2 but rarely did because Panther Classic ran it fine. I
installed Tiger (thanx to Senor CaJones) over Panther 10.3.8 without
incident. But Classic now gets stuck early in start up of 9.2.2. I have
repaired volumes, repaired permissions, booted up fine in 9.2.2 by
choosing it as the startup disk. I cannot, however, boot into 9.2.2 on
startup by holding down the option key. . . it isn't recognized as a
legitimite option, doesn't appear. Can someone suggest a fix? ---Ken

Try starting up Classic (within Tiger) with extensions off. You can do
this from the Classic preference pane. If that doesn't work you may have
to reinstall Classic.

I don't think this is a new problem, or even a problem. Using Open
Firmware to see a Classic folder has always been hit-or-miss. Since you
can start up in 9.2.2 by using the startup disk preferences, you can
start up in 9.2.2. So don't worry about it. m.

All I can say is, I have the same behavior here...

As others have recommended, I restored OS 9.2.2 from original disks, but
this made no difference. Then I installed a second copy of Tiger onto
another disk partition and was immediately able to start up Classic. The
first time I installed Tiger I apparently did a custom install because I
notice the "extra" languages present in my second Tiger install are not
present in my first Tiger install.

If you have an extra partition, maybe try installing Tiger using the
basic easy install. It will take forever and install drivers for 1000
printers you will never have. But perhaps you will be able to use
Classic then. I'll be interested to see your results if you try it.

In the end I bluntly copied the OS9 system folder from my wife's mac (I
bought a falimy install for Tiger, her Classic was working well), and
everythig went OK (the new OS9 rebuilt its own desktop database, which I
think is normal since I displaced it on another disk).
This is not very intelligent, but it worked...

In another newsgroup MacBradPro said OS X works best when loaded onto
the first partition of a hard drive. That may be an important factor
because Classic failed to work for me when Tiger was loaded on the
second partition but loaded Classic just fine when Tiger was on the
first partition. I don't think it matters which partition OS 9.2 is on.

Have you tried (re)starting Classic with all extensions turned off?  You
can find this option in System Preferences - Classic - Advanced.  If that
works, use Extensions Manager to enable a few extensions at a time, until
you find the one that's causing problems.

matt and wayne (and anyone else obviously),

Thanks but the hang occurs with "Extensions Off" in the Tiger Sys Pref
panel where I try to start Classic. I can boot up into OS 9 fine and
have used the extensions manager control panel to select all the 9.2.2
extensions/control panels and disable everything that wasn't installed
with 9.2.1 install disk + 9.2.2 later update.

I tried to to a clean reinstall of OS9. The OS9.2.1 install disk
booted me up fine but wouldn't let me install; said to refer to docs.
I used to be able to install OS9 on this Powermac G4 867 MHz
mirror-drive door, but now I am not allowed to. So I cannot run Classic
and can nevermore install OS9 on any of my internal volumes I guess.
Something is really wrong with this picture. I don't see in the
docs any reference to my problem. Hope someone figures this out
soon.---Ken

Did you repair "classic permissions"? Its old fashion desktop rebuild.
Also, try the classic control panes "all extensions off" and see if it
works

BTW I noticed something cool that Classic startup uses idle priority
not to slow down the OS X apps so if you use seti@home, folding@home it
will start 50% slower. At least here I say.
