Undeleting files

I lost a file recently when Apple Mail did an rm -rf on it's mbox
instead of moving it to the trash or something friendly like that. Is
there a way to recover files under OS/X with nothing (like Norton)
pre-installed? Anything freeware/shareware? Does OS/X immediately reuse
the space, or will it hang around for a while? Can I take advantage of
the journaling?

Thanks!

Not generally.  The standard response is "restore the file from your
backup".  There are data recovery applications out there but many of
them work by installing software which tracks the deletion to allow you
recover them.

If this is really important, you could take the drive to a data recovery
service.  They'll gladly take your money (4 figures or more with no
guarantee).

So, how badly do you want this file?

[hint: start with regular backups]

It's possible, but not guaranteed. It's much more likely if nothing -
including the recovery app - gets written to your drive between the
deletion and the attempt at recovery. TechTool Pro would be my first
choice. Norton would not be on my list. See the archives of this group
or pretty much any other Mac apps forum for why.

It doesn't necessarily immediately reuse it, but it's certainly fair
game for reuse any time after the deletion.

Nope. That's not what journaling does.

There's nothing quite like the joy of first hearing an Alvin & the Chipmunks
cover of Pink Floyd's "The Final Cut." "Not Now John" is especially sublime.
