The tech support guy at Micromat had never heard of a G4 that cannot
boot from an external firewire drive, and yet mine never has since I
have owned it. Do you know how Apple implemented it, and whether it can
be reversed?

In a room full of 25 identical MDD G4's, I have one that won't boot
from Firewire. Faulty something I imagine. Never impeded me so much
that I felt the need to look into it as of yet.

The OP wasn't asking about MDDs; he was asking about Yikes! which, in
fact, cannot boot from FireWire.

To the OP: The fix is to replace the machine.

There's nothing quite like the joy of first hearing an Alvin & the Chipmunks
cover of Pink Floyd's "The Final Cut." "Not Now John" is especially sublime.

The Yikes G4 used the same motherboard as the B&W G3 and, like the
latter, cannot boot from a FW drive or be booted in target disk mode.

He should have.

The "Sawtooth" (AGP) G4 was the first G4 model that supported booting
from FireWire. The Yikes (PCI) G4 can't boot from FireWire, and there is
no workaround. Sorry.
