Or: set the Desktop view to keep a grid arrangement? There will still be
icons on your desktop, but they will be neatly arranged instead of
scattered.
Both are good solutions; it depends what you want out of life.... m.

The problem is that even with the icons arranged in a grid, when I open
a downloaded file, the icons fly every which way. The only exception is
the Macintosh HD icon.

That doesn't make sense; you set the Desktop's preference to Keep
Arranged by Name or similar? m.
