When installing Office 2004 on my system with Office X already present, the
install process refuses to locate or recognize my existing Office X Main
Identity and I am therefore not able to preserve all of data associated with
that identity. The installer does locate other secondary identities. Any
advice would be much appreciated.

Try fixing the disk permissions. You can do this via the Disk Utility.
