Airport Admin Utility failure

Anyone know why Airport Admin Utility would suddenly fail to see
any airports at all?  It's not that the airport isn't working;
it's working fine (at the moment).  Internet requests work; two
ssh connections to remote machines work; the airport icon in the
menu bar works.  But Airport Admin says there aren't any airports
visible.

The only thing resembling an error message that I can find is
in /var/log/system.log, which ends with many copies of:

Feb 10 10:32:19 localhost mDNSResponder[176]: mDNSPlatformSendUDP sendto failed to send
packet on InterfaceID 0180FA00 en1/4 to 224.0.0.251:5353 skt 8 error -1 errno 51 (Network
is unreachable)

There's nothing here that mentions an airport, but when I stop
Airport Admin, these messages stop, and when I restart Airport
Admin, I get a burst of new ones, and then another every minute
or so.  Also, hitting the Rescan icon immediately gets several
more of these messages.  So it probably comes from Airport Admin,
and is probably trying to tell me what's wrong.  But the [Network
is unreachable] is obviously bogus, because the Network is working
fine.

Anyone know how to diagnose this?

Here are three trouble-shooting steps you should try. First, from your
computer, turn Airport off and then on again. If that doesn't work,
restart the computer. If that doesn't work, reset the base station; it's
hard for me to reach my reset button, but I haven't yet encountered a
problem that isn't solved by pulling the plug on the base station and
then reconnecting it.

What happens if you select "Other" and specify the IP address of your
AirPort base station?

That was one of the things that I tried.  It seems to talk to the airport;
at least it displays the right info (which could come from a local file).

But when I tell it to "Update", /var/log/system.log gets a flood of what
look like error messages:

Feb 10 13:45:35 localhost kernel: AirPort:  Link DOWN
Feb 10 13:45:35 localhost configd[90]: AppleTalk shutdown
Feb 10 13:45:35 localhost configd[90]: AppleTalk shutdown complete
Feb 10 13:45:39 localhost named[298]: loading configuration from
'/etc/com.apple.named.conf.proxy'
Feb 10 13:45:39 localhost configd[90]: executing
/System/Library/SystemConfiguration/Kicker.bundle/Contents/Resources/set-hostname
Feb 10 13:45:39 localhost named[298]: /etc/com.apple.named.conf.proxy:26: no forwarders
seen; disabling forwarding
Feb 10 13:45:39 localhost named[298]: none:0: open: /private/etc/rndc.key: file not found
Feb 10 13:45:39 localhost named[298]: /etc/com.apple.named.conf.proxy:7: couldn't install
keys for command channel 127.0.0.1#54: file not found
Feb 10 13:45:39 localhost named[298]: /etc/com.apple.named.conf.proxy:7: couldn't add
command channel 127.0.0.1#54: file not found
Feb 10 13:45:39 localhost configd[90]: posting notification
com.apple.system.config.network_change
Feb 10 13:45:39 localhost mach_init[2]: Server 0 in bootstrap d03 uid 0:

Feb 10 13:45:41 localhost lookupd[3763]: lookupd (version 324.7) starting - Thu Feb 10
13:45:41 2005
Feb 10 13:45:42 localhost lookupd[3763]: NetInfo connection failed for server 127.0.0.1/local
...

One puzzle is why it's doing the AppleTalk stuff.  To my knowledge, I'm not
using AppleTalk.  I also remember some time in the past telling it not to use
AppleTalk, though now I can't find the controls for that. Airport Admin doesn't
seem to mention AppleTalk anywhere that I can find.

The file /etc/com.apple.named.conf.proxy does exist, and is world readable.
I have no idea what it's about, though.  Its comments mention rndc, which
I've never heard of.

I can't really help you there.  My base station is an old Graphite one
and the Airport Adimin Utility doesn't have any "Update" function.   I
can Save and Import configuration files and Upload new firmware, but no
Update.   :-(
