Renames files when copying into library

I am new to iTunes and have a situation that I cant resolve.
I have a folder called Math and in the folder are a series of lectures in
mp3 format.  The files are named as follows "Math-1-01.mp3"  Where Math is
the subject, the 1 is for the session and the 01 is a track identification
for that session.  So the next file is "Math-1-02.mp3,  Etc.
When I drag this folder to the library, it copies the folder to its default
directory but goes and renames all the file names to "Track 01.mp3,...etc
I have unchecked "keep music files folders organized"
What is going on here and how can I get around this problem

If I understand you correctly the "Track 01.mp3" name is what you see in
the iTunes window as the "Song Name", if so, what iTunes displays are
the mp3 tags which are embedded within the the files themselves and not
the name of the file itself. Since you have not entered any tags to the
file iTunes displays the generic "Track 01.mp3"

If you select one of the files then either CommandKey+I or select "Get
Info" from the File menu, you'll see all the fields where you can edit
various tags, and a there is a field just for adding comments. You can
also batch edit groups of files by selecting them all in the iTunes
window and then do the Get Info.

That is exactly what is happening.  The Track 01 appears under the song
title.  I have a large number of files and I know I can do that with the
getinfo.  But is there a way to make iTunes not look for the tags
thanks for your help.

Since iTunes only displays the mp3 tags you will need to enter the
information you desire.

A site, well worth supporting, that you may find helpful is "Doug's
AppleScripts For iTunes" at:

MP3 Rage will allow you to re-fill the various elements of the mp3
headers (title, artist, year, etc.) by using the filename on your disk.
And hundreds of other things.  it's a great all-purpose tool for such
things.

Thanks for your response.  I am new to the mp3 music world and what you said
is not really found in any book.  Also I have to admit I am a Windows person
but will look at mp3 rage.  It looks like in comes in a Windows version.
I guess the bottom line is that all mp3 have tags and if not(like in the
lecture ) iTunes assigns them some default(track 01,...)  I guess it has to
work that way.  I have looked at several books on itunes and Ipod but none
have discussed working with created mp3 files.
Thanks again
Jack

Did you try using the Get Info to switch the name back?  If that works,
it seems an adequate solution to renaming a few files, but, if you need
to do this with many files, it is obviously a poor solution.
