NAV needed on OS X Mac?

In years past I used Norton Anti Virus on my pre OS X Macs.

Since moving to OS X, I've read here and elsewhere that most users feel
it is not needed. I believe mainly due to the few if any Mac viruses.

Is that still the prevailing wisdom??

Thanks.

Yes.  Symantec is slowly closing down their Mac software offerings
(surprise!).  Norton Systemworks is no longer supported on the
Macintosh.  Norton Utilities has been discontinued.

If you feel you must run some sort of Virus scanner, there's Virex and
others.  Stay away from anything Symantec makes.

Stay away from Virex too. ClamXav works great and is free. m.

The exactly zero viruses, yes.

Yes.  Norton not only isn't needed, but it does strange and unwelcome
things to your system.  We've had more than a few folks come through here
with odd problems that were solved by uninstalling Norton.  Save the
50 bucks, and your sanity.

Yes - there are to date zero OS X native viruses.
But there are about a hundred old (pre- OSX) Mac viruses,
and several thousands of Word/Excel macro viruses out there

So unless one or more of the following applies:

- you regularly download vintage software through LimeWire or the like
- you frequently exchange Word/Excel files with "unsafe" PC users
- you share parts of you disk to PC users over a local network and
need to be sure PC viruses don't use the share to proliferate.
- there is a corporate demand to have antivirus software

... you don't need NAV or any other AV software. Else, you may
need one, and, IMO NAV is a good - but not the only - option.

Did I miss something in the list ???

I recommend Macs to my friends, and Intel machines
to those whom I don't mind billing by the hour

Nope.

Thanks to you and the others for the input.

I think I'll leave NAV on the shelf not on my Mac. ;)

Appreciate the help.
