I use the Sherlock dictionary many times daily. Recently, it started
bringing up entries only from Princeton's WordNet instead of the several
dictionaries it used in the past. This is *very* bad. Today I tried
getting synonyms for the noun, "criminal" but it would only show me
"criminal" as an adjective!
Has this service been ruined (like so much else of Sherlock)? I have
not seen anything written about this here or on MacFixit or Tidbits,
etc. Did I miss something? Any ideas?

Hi Madeline,
Sorry I don't use Sherlock, but Google's dictionary is good and easy to use. For
synonyms I use the free Nisus Thesaurus, which adds itself to OSX's Services
menu.

Thanks for responding. The nice thing about the Sherlock dictionary is
that it brings up both definitions and synonyms at the same time. Also,
you don't need your browser for it and can just leave it open all the
time.

I'd wager it's link rot within Sherlock. A dictionary site or two
changes their policy and/or search system, and suddenly Sherlock doesn't
know which end is up.
You can type 'define:criminal' in the Google bar in Safari, and get a
few definitions back.

How does one fix link rot? That is so descriptive. :)

I've had no problems accessing the dictionary (osx 10.3.7), and use it
frequently. I have, on the other hand, not been able to make use of
the "Pictures" channel, receiving a "This channel is temporarily
unavailable. Check back soon". Thus it has remained for probably a
month.
Any ideas on fixing/redirecting that one?

That channel has been broken for a long time (a few months since I last
checked). You can try Beholder Lite if you want a replacement app:

Oh, it still works--you still get definitions and synonyms for the words
you enter. The issue is that it used to provide more content than it's
currently doing. Go to dictionary.com (the source of Sherlock's
dictionary content) in a web browser and look up a word, then look up
the same word in Sherlock. You'll likely find a lot more content in the
web search. Sherlock used to display much of that content.
