Crystal Quest (or Help Finding an Old Game)

Alex Warofka - 28 Jan 2005 01:46 GMT Hi, All,
I know this may seem like a somewhat strange question, but I was wondering if anyone could help me track down an old Mac game.
I remember playing a game called "Crystal Quest" in elementary school on the classroom Macintosh. All of the students would rush to get their books put away as soon as possible at the end of the day so they could claim the computer to play this game for a few minutes before they had to go wait for the bus.
The game involved piloting a little UFO-type object around with the mouse and collecting all of the crystals on the screen without hitting the walls or enemies and then navigating through a small hole in the top (or was it the bottom?) of the screen before the timer ran out.
I remember really liking this game, but I didn't have a Mac of my own at the time. I managed to find a DOS clone of the game called "X Quest," but it was never really the same.
Now that I do own a Mac, I was wondering if anyone could point me towards a downloadable copy of this old game. I'd like to be able to play it just to bring back some memories.
If anyone could find this for me I would greatly appreciate it.
Thanks,
Alex Warofka

Would this be a legal download if it was working? I've still got a CD-ROM of Crystal Quest around somewhere. If it could be legally distributed, I wouldn't mind making a disk image or something.

It's close, but no cigar. c) I seem to recall a friend of mine reporting that Crystal Quest is silent under recent pre-X Mac OS because the sound mechanism it's using was desupported some time in the late 1990s.

The last release of Crystal Crazy, version 1.0.6, released in 1999, fixed the sound problem with PowerPC machines. It works just fine on my original beige G3 tower running OS 9.2.2.

I haven't tried playing it after booting in 9 - does yours have sound?

The sound is fun - I love the breaking glass - it contributes to the anger venting function of the game. I will keep looking for the patch.

I suspect this CD might show up on eBay, though it's not there now, I checked.

I'll be on the lookout for it.

Do you know where I could get that, or a patch from 1.03? I would dearly love to have that game working again.

I have done a lot of searching for the patch - no luck.
I am going to try downloading the demo and moving the sound files over - that should at least give me sound in the first 9 waves, and it may restore sound completely.
1.0.3 will play, but without sound. I can play it in OS 10, but it keeps messing up my Dock, and launching apps I haven't launched. Hiding the Dock doesn't fix this (although it helps). The game is so much fun, I boot in 9 to play it. I think it is the only thing I need OS 9 for. I used to boot in 9 to play the original LodeRunner (the Mad Monks), but, since, I've played that start-to-finish at least 5 times, it'll probably be another year before I want to play it again.

(Superseded to correct the name of the sequel. I had actually referenced an older product.)

In some cases the publishing company no longer exists. If no one "inherets" a software title, whose copyright rights are you infringing upon? In other cases the company no longer cares about it and doesn't have anything to gain (like making money) by stopping people from trading it.
In either case, if you contact mac.the-underdogs.com and upload the file, _they_ will host it. And there are several places on their site that say "if someone with rights to this software wants it removed, we will take it down".

The publisher Casady & Greene may be out of business but the game's authors Patrick Buckland (Game Design) is the CEO & Co-Founder of the British game company Stainless Games, Ltd. and Alasdair Klyne (Programming & Internal Design) is Managing Director of Klynet IT Solutions, Ltd. they may still have rights to the Crystal games.

Gerry - 28 Jan 2005 02:41 GMT > Hi, All, > [quoted text clipped - 25 lines] > > Alex Warofka Crystal Quest was very nicely updated by Crystal Crazy (The Quest continues...) both were sold by Casady & Greene, which sadly has gone out of business. I miss them very much as every year at MacWorld they were always there with something new.
Do a search on "Crystal Crazy" and you will find many interesting sites.

Unfortunately, the site is having problems and right now you can't download anything, but keep checking back.
I also found this site:
http://www.euronet.nl/users/mvdk/system_6_heaven.html
If you do a search for "mac abandonware" or "system 6 games" you'll get a lot of hits. Just for kicks I downloaded the version of Tetris I played on an SE30 15 years ago and it booted in classic and ran flawlessly!
Good luck.

Not having sound when running in Classic under OS X isn't an issue; I have a number of old System 6 and 7 Macs lying about as I have become something of a collector recently.
I will watch the Underdogs link and hope that it comes back online soon. I really appreciate everyone's responses.

I've got a demo version of CQ 2.2.5 (according to my catalog) archived on CD. If you're interested let me know and I'll dig it out. Circa 1992.
