Are there any apps for editing MP3s files?  Can this even be done?  In
other words, I have a big MP3 file and want to cut out parts of it and
put the rest into a new MP3 file.

Thanks.

Audacity, available for free  through sourceforge.net.

note that you need to download the mp3 encoder separately. Read the
docs carefully before you do your install.

Any audio-editing application will open MP3s and decompress them and
allow you to edit them, and then recompress them as MP3s. (And no, you
can't edit an MP3 directly) Try Amadeus - it's pretty nice.

But note that it depends what editing you want to do. MP3 Trimmer can
directly trim beginning and end of mp3 files, and join two mp3 files.
With a bit of effort that would enable one to do  some other editing.
