I can't DROPSTUFF anymore. What gives?

Hi...

I'm running Mac OS X 10.3.7 and suddenly find that I can no longer use
StuffIt Deluxe (DropStuff, in particular). Both StuffIt Deluxe and
DropStuff no longer seem to work. They bounce around in the dock all
day, but never run (application not responding, after a few seconds.)
Other StuffIt apps (such as DropConvert, Secure Delete) run without
problem. But, DropStuff (the most important to me) fails. It worked
fine a few days ago, but I can't imagine (or remember) what I might
have done in the mean time to make it fail.

I was running StuffIt Deluxe 8.0.2 when I discovered this happening. I
tried re-installing it but same problem. I tried re-booting, same
problem. I tried Repairing Permissions, same problem. I tried a newer
version of StuffIt but same problem as well.

I also read somewhere that some users had to go back to 8.0.1 to fix
similar problems (which I'd rather not do) when they upgraded to a
newer Mac OSX, but I'm not sure how to do that anyway. I can't seem to
find a 8.0.1 installer. Also...I know DropStuff worked in the last few
days (well AFTER I upgraded to Mac 10.3.7 from 10.3.6) so I'm a little
mystified and am NOT blaming the move to 10.3.7.

Anyone have any ideas on how I can dropstuff again?

THANKS!

I just spent 2 hours with such a problem after updating stuffit.
Appeared not to work, just bounced for a while and I kept force quitting it.
Seems to be a bug in the 'auto version check' which is on by default.
I waited it out, it timed out and stopped bouncing, about 2 minutes.
Then promptly disabled the 'auto version check' in stuffit expander.
Now it works as it should.

That is (now, WAS!) exactly the problem I had. THANK YOU!

The server it is trying to contact has been down for a few days
apparently.

Just my opinion, but I think they should have set that option off by
default.  ;-)

Is this option available only in the Deluxe version?  I just bought the
Standard version and the option is not in Preferences.

I only use the FREE stuffit and after the 2 hour snafu I had with their
problem, I won't be buying it.  I have no clue how the other versions may or
may not differ, sorry.  Perhaps someone else knows that might be following
the thread.

After it eventually opens, go to Preferences ... scroll sideways to
choose Version Check (you may not spot this at first glance) ...
uncheck. That should be it.

Thanks, Adrian.  That was it.  Pretty dumb of me not to have seen it
before.

Well, the free version came with my new G4 PB as well.  Then after 30
days I was informed that to continue using it, I'd have to buy it.

I have never had it do that for the uncompressing part.
Yes the dropstuff (to make archives) has a 30 day limit or such.
I don't use that part of the package, if I need to make a zip I do it on my
Atari where it's still free.  ;-)
