I would like to setup a rule within Mail to prevent or acknowledge the
absent of subject text. Would anyone know to do this?

Briefly playing with Mail's rules I don't see any quick way to do it as
Mail won't allow an empty field in the rule criterion.

I can imagine an AppleScript to do what you're after.

I tried putting nothing inside two ' signs but it didn't work.
I wonder: is your reason for asking the same as mine?
Viz., that some loony keeps sending me e-mails with blanks in the
message header,  from line no text?

If Mail app doesn't, as Dave Balderstone mentioned, allow an empty
field, can anyone suggest an alternative way of recognising/filtering
out messages like these?

Kind regards,
Devi

I have been getting the same type of e-mail. Seven or eight like that a
day. Don't know what they are up to but I also have not been able to
figure out a rule yet that works.

How about.... "Subject does not contain [insert most frequently used
letter]"

LOL sorry, that was completely stupid.

Actually, not stupid at all... Test for vowels.

;-)

If all of the following conditions are met:
Subject does not contain a
Subject does not contain e
Subject does not contain i
Subject does not contain o
Subject does not contain u

Perform the following actions:
Move message to Trash
Mark as read
Stop evaluating rules

I am going to try that. Except all the following conditions are met:
From does not contain a

The e-mails that are blank have no text in the From header. They also
have no text in the subject header, but sometimes real correspondents,
forget to put in a subject header. The ones with no from are not real.

'Thy' ?

Well, since I know no old-time Quakers, I'm prepared to take a chance on
this particular false negative... Thank you!

Kind regards,

The idea was to test for a blank subject so based on Madwen's post I
wondered what the shortest list of letters one would have to test for.

I can think of a couple of possible subject lines that one would have
to add "y" to the list for. Good catch.

My, my, my...

How about "My Hymns" or "Fly 2PM 3/3/05" or similar ... great idea for
the From field though.

Or those people who don't put anything at all the subject line, even if
it's not spam?

Yep, testing for all the vowels (don't forget Y) should catch 99% of
those subjectless emails.  :)

The test for vowels in the "From" line works. Thank you Madwen and Dave.
