Expander Choking

I can't seem to get Stuffit Expander to work on my new volume of Panther
10.3.7 (everything else seems to be running w/o a hitch).  I tried the
one that came with Panther and when that failed to work, I DLd the new
one--- 9.0.1.  When I drop files on either one (they don't appear to be
working automatically), the spinning beach ball of death starts and
won't stop until I force quit the application.  Any ideas?
Alternatives?  I looked on Version Tracker for expanders but came up dry.

Does it work if you login as a different user?

Nope.  I ran permissions again as well but that did not seem to fix it.
I looked at Expander and the privileges seem just fine with "read &
write" at the system level.  Here is a link for one of the files I am
trying to unzip:

http://cryptome.org/oneill-02.zip

But I also had a .sit file that would not expand either.  Maybe I am
just having a bad run of luck with the integrity of the files I want to
expand (?).  I will try some others.  I was worried, though, because it
got only 2 stars on VT so others are obviously having troubles with it
too.  I have not yet found any older versions to use.  Thanks for
responding.

That file expands OK here using Stuffit Expander 9.0.1.

I have folders for both Aladdin and Stuffit Engine.cfm in
/Library/Application Support.  Maybe one of them contains a damaged
file?  You might try deleting everything in /Applications and /Library
that has anything to do with the Expander and then reinstalling it.

Holy mackerel!  I don't have either an Aladdin or Stuffit Engine file in
either of my Libraries.  This is so bizarre.  I can see how it might
have missed once but to miss twice, once on the Panther install and then
again on DLing the 9.0.1 upgrade.  I am totally confused.

On closer inspection, the dates indicate that those folders may belong
to prior versions.  I'll trash them and see what happens.  Hope i didn't
alarm you unnecessarily.

No problem.  I'll wait, now, and see if they get their web site
functioning.  It seems inconceivable that they could design something so
poorly that it would just hang if it gets no response upon contacting
the web site for a version number.  But that does seem like it's the
problem.  ::tsks::

For years we put up with these kinds of problems from Aladdin.  I
remember it got so bad once that another developer published
MindExpander but that was pre-OS X.  I used it for years.  A pity there
was no X version. :(  It's hard to believe there are no other options.

Lots, and mean LOTS of people are suddenly having this problem. Found a
post on the Apple Support in the Discussion area about this. It seems
related to the "Allow Version Checking" in the programs. Once that is
turned off this 'delay' goes away. You will have to wait for several
minutes for StuffIt to start up, but it will eventually. Then just go
to the preferences and make sure you uncheck "Allow Version Checking"

Cheers!

I waited 10 minutes while it bounced in the dock and never started.

Did it to me as well. It worked fine last night then this morning it was
hanging. I rebooted hoping to clear whatever was hanging it and tried
again. It took awhile and then opened. So I left it open and hid it. I
tried turning version tracking off and that fixed it. I tried earlier to
see if there was a new version out through Stuffit and the web site was
not opening so I would guess that is related. Thanks.

Thanks for the information.

Hung on me too. Only fix I could find was reinstall version 8. OK

Well of course not! The other posters here got it right about the need
to scroll to the right in Preferences to turn off "Allow Version
Checking". I wouldn't post this except to prevent anyone who reads my
previous post from wasting time reinstalling.

There may be a larger lesson here for me too. I wonder how many other
times I have been stymied by not noticing a scrollbar possibility.

I finally got it to work after disconnecting from the internet.  I have
looked and looked and I cannot find such a preference as "allow version
checking".   My Stuffit Expander is v. 9.01 build 877.  Where is it?

Oooops nevermind, I found it. (missed the scroll bar)

Don't feel alone, I did the first time, too. Only after Help said it was
there and I went back and found it. Have to scroll over to the right to
find it, otherwise it is not visible for anyone else who needs to do
this.
