Selecting audio input in GarageBand

I was inspired by the "From Tape to CD" article in a recent MacWorld
magazine issue to try it myself with some old vinyl that I have. I
connected the stereo to the audio input of the PowerBook G4, and as
suggested in GarageBand help used the System Preferences to select the
Line In as the audio input. This appeared to be working as I could see
the sound meter registering the input from the stereo. However, in the
GarageBand Preferences I was not able to select the Line In as audio
input. The only available entry in the Audio input pop-up menu was/is
Built-in Audio.
Does anyone know a secret in getting GarageBand to recognise the line
in as the audio input?

Thanks in advance,
Graham.

I honestly don't know what the line in is good for...
I'd recommned shelling out the 40 clams for the Griffin iMic, which
will amplify and improve the sound quality of whatever you're trying to
hook up to the computer...

Importing audio data.

Where do you plug it in?

Me, I just put my entire mixboard into the line-in port.  This has
guitars, mic's, synths--all kinds of other claptrap--plugged into it.

Graham,

Hey, I figured this out the other day. You actually need to change the
audio setting in system preferences to line in.
