How terrible is terrible? My experience suggests that 56K
connection rates are in the range of 36 - 46 kbits/sec,
which should translate to raw download rates of 4.3 - 5.5
kbytes/sec for files that cannot be compressed (if my
impromptu math is correct). Knock another 10% off for
TCP/IP overhead.

Your posting IP (65.229.148.47) indicates you're in
Moultonborough, NH. If this is correct, there are other
residential DSL providers. See:

I'm in Alexandria, Virginia, using an iMac internal 56K and 10.3.2,
I'm using Verizon and my downloads range from 3.5 to 4.1. Nothing has
changed over time. I've been experiencing almost identical downloads
ever since acquiring a 56k modem seven years ago and going from 8.1.to
9.2 on a 4300/200.
My problem has been with the eternal "You have been disconnected"
message that invariably happens between 11:00 pm and 1:00 am. I just
don't attempt downloads during that period. I've never been able to
determine if it's my ISP or the Verizon idiots.

Please don't... same scripts are recycled under different names to make
number of scripts appear like it's a lot. Then... no matter what their
guarantee says, you are not going to get your money back. Several times
I asked for my money back and only response was a generic email pointed
to their website. No other way to contact them.
Support is terrible... actually none. I sent several emails with
problems I was experiencing. Never one response regarding problem(s)
other than pointers to their website which was absolutely no help.
Bottom line = ripoff

Verizion probably owns the lines and they are not good enough for high
speed transmission or he may live too far from the switch.

The headers of his article included
"NNTP-Posting-Host: 65.229.148.47"
Sticking this into Geobytes IP locator tool gives Moultonborough, NH.
<http://www.geobytes.com/iplocator.htm>
Similarly your headers indicate:
"NNTP-Posting-Host: 68.83.132.24"
which translates to ... Ambler, PA.

My rule-of-thumb is to estimate 10 bits per byte, which takes care of
protocol overhead and such.
So with a 53Kbps connection (top speed) you can expect about 5-5.5K/s.
If you connect at 44Kbps, you can expect about 4.4K/s.
This isn't perfect, but it's good enough for most purposes.
