Following up my own post... There must be some way to do this that's
easier than by hand.
How to keep iTumes Library up to date?
- It would be easy to sync the ~/Music/iTunes/iTunes Music where all
the music is located. Carbon Copy Cloner, Synchronize Pro X, psync,
etc.
- How to get the iTunes "Library" to reflect the new music?
- To deal with this, I have been manually comparing the folder
structure in ~/Music/iTunes/iTunes Music and draging new music onto the
Library icon in iTunes. This adds it to the Library (and I've told
iTunes to "copy files.. when adding to library").

- How to synchronize playlists?

There is a reason that it's not easy, and the reason has nothing to do with
programming.
Apple deliberately and intentionally made it difficult to synchronize an iPod
between different Macs. Why? Because the RIAA told them to, as a condition of
licensing music for iTunes.
If it were easy to dfo, then I could just take your entire music library simply
by plugging your iPod directly into my computer.

This was Apple's decision as a copyright protection method. . There
are, however, many third party apps which allow you to transfer music
from your iPod to another computer's library. I use iPodiTunes to sync
my desktop with my PB. It makes it a cinch to clone both the library
and the playlists. It wasn't cheap, but I use it often enough that it
is worth the expense. There are other programs - XPod is one. There is
also at least one free program whose name I can't recall.
Check out the options at versiontracker.com.

Interesting, but I don't recall the OP mentioning an iPod. She has two
macs that she wants to sync.
I use Retropect's duplicate function for that. But there are a variety
of ways to sync a directory on one mac with a directory on another.
Transmit X is an FTP program that has the ability to synchronize. The
options are many. You'd just need to mirror the /Users/me/Music
directory.
