Like it says. I'd like to make some PDFs with embedded fonts and line
art, and I'm not sure if AppleWorks & print-to-PDF is really up to the
task. Any other shareware solutions available?
Thanks

I think you have two issues here:
- Appleworks as a vector graphics package vs others
- Apple's "print-to-pdf" function versus others
On the fist point you will find a range of software from the simplest to
the most complete/complex, let's mention Intaglio for its excellent user
interface (and features like the capacity to dissociate vectorial pdfs
that you paste in it), or Canvas on the max-feature side (my advice: I
love Intaglio, but if you like/are used to Appleworks, you may as well
stay with it)
On the second point others will be more competent. Let's say there *are*
alternative to Adobe, including some that can handle all pdf buttons,
links and other subtleties, like PDF-Office...
You'll find all them on MacUpdate
