I disagree. It may be a control panel, but you normally open it from the
'Extra' menu in Explorer, so most people wouldn't even know that it's a
control panel. It looks like just another preferences window, and that's
the way it should be. It doesn't really matter if it's a control panel,
as long as it doesn't bother or confuse people, but works as you'd
expect it to work. That's what 'intuitive' means, if you ask me.
But changing the default browser in the preferences of Safari is utterly
silly. What if you want to change those settings because Safari crashes
on you?... Catch 22!

Why don't you instead ride the a.s of Firefox developers for not putting
in a similar "make me default" preference? All Apple did was change
where the setting got made from system-level for a few specific URL
schemes to app-level for their arbitrary URL schemes. It's not Safari
that's acting un-Mac-like (except for that terrible brushed metal! :-).

I disagree. The default browser should be a system-level setting, as it
was with OSX 10.2. It's not a Safari-specific preference.

Unfortunately, Apple seemed to get this wrong in a couple of places in
Panther. They made the same mistake with the default mail client: the
setting is in Mail.app.

Fortunately, there is a freeware Preference Pane called "Default Apps"
that corrects this mistake.

I didn't realize there was another way to get to it -- I've always
opened it from the control panels.

I didn't even realize it's a control panel until you said so. I always
open it from Explorer, since that is the logical thing to do. ;-)

Since I don't use Windows that much, I was at first hopelessly confused
when the control panel and the IE menu option gave me exactly the same
set of options!
