Font Book mystery

How can I print in a font that's not only not in Font Book but that it
won't import?   OK, the font in question is in my User library along
with others that did not come with the MacBook Pro laptop, but the
others are listed in Font Book.  Is my computer so "Intel"ligent that it
can use a font it claims doesn't exist?  It does some strange things to
it, but will print at least part of it.

I was trying to use it in a letter to someone interested in runes(it's a
rune font) and odd things were happening, so I moved the letter to the
old computer where the font was at home, which is also the only one the
printer will communicate anyway, finished the page, and printed.  But
now my curiosity is working overtime.  I found the font IS, as I said,
in my User library, but not even Spotlight will admit its existence,
even though it appears in AppleWork's font list.

Or. . . horrid thought. . . could this mystery font be related to my
as-yet-undiscovered Firefox gremlin?   That would be the ultimate
weirdness.

How old is the font? Who made it? Do you have a virgin backup copy you
could replace the existing one with just in case the current one has
been corrupted? What kind is it? OS 10 won't recognize bitmap or Adobe
Type 3 fonts.

Just to be clear, if you load fonts by putting them in your home folder
(perfectly acceptable approach), the path should be
~/Library/Fonts/<whatever font>. My point being that they have to be
inside the Fonts sub-folder, not just loose in your home Library.

I wouldn't think so.

OK, I have now investigated.  1993, but no further info, and that's
all I have on the other computer, too.  It won't tell me where it came
from, but I originally downloaded it from somewhere on the web(at least
my organic memory is still working).  I noticed another font on the
other computer that TELLS me it's a bitmapped one, but I don't know
where to look for more info on this one.  I have some other fonts I
acquired from the web, but they came with more info, and when moved
over to the new MacBook Pro and its OS X, they all ended up listed in
FontBook--except this one.  It's in my ~/Library/Fonts/Bryggen folder,
where 12 and 24-point versions appear.  When I ask it for info, it lists
FontBook as default user, though it doesn't appear there the way every
other font I've moved does.

So it's there, but not in FontBook.   And yesterday I played with it
again and it was behaving as long as I used either 12 or 24 point.  I
suspect I was trying to manipulate an odd size when it was being weird
earlier.  This computer being so much more INTELligent than the poor old
G4, may it have been trying to do something the font wouldn't put up
with???

No one needs as many fonts as I have cluttering up my computer, but I
discovered early on that trying to delete the boring ones can have
unfortunate side effects, so I just added the old acquisitions to what
came with the laptop.

Then it's likely a bitmap. Bitmaps aren't supported in OS X.

Interesting.  Because yesterday afternoon it was behaving as long as I
chose one of those sizes.  However, I can't print from the laptop
because my printer is too old, and the font is on the G4, which can,
anyway.

That confirms it's a bitmap.

Google is your friend!  ;)

<http://babel.uoregon.edu/yamada/fonts/runes.html>

Looks like it's a bitmap. I can't really tell though because it's in
StuffIt form. My version of StuffIt Expander doesn't work with 10.5, and
they want my name and email address before they'll send me the download
instructions to get it. You, of course, are welcome to pursue it if you
choose.

Oh, lovely!  This site has straight old futhark! This font is hard
to type from anyway, because it doesn't give me straight old futhark
without switching back and forth between upper and lower case.

I tend to collect odd fonts, even if I seldom use them.  8-)

There is an interesting collection of fonts from Apostrophic Lab that I've
posted in my taliesinsoft iDisk Public folder. I'm quite certain that there
is no licensing problem if you download them.
