That won't "restore" the emails that were stored in the Inbox that got
wiped. If you had your account setup to copy and delete the email from
the remote server, it's gone unless you have backups.
In the off chance you had Apple Mail setup to delete the files weekly or
daily, then they may still be there. But, I've heard that Apple Mail
will do something stupid like delete all the emails if you delete the
mailbox. It's a common gotcha that lots of people have been bitten by
over the years.
So, yes, you can do the rule thing but it won't get the stuff in Inbox
back.

Problem is not stuff in the Inbox --
1. I don't leave stuff in there.
2. I can access mail in the account folder (that would have gone to
the Inbox) by going directly to ~Library/Mail. In fact, I've aliased
that folder to my desktop so I can doublecheck.
What seems to happen is that mail goes into a folder (that used to be
a mailbox) in the Inbox but can't be accessed from Mail, only by going
directly to the Library folder.
And no, I'm too cautious to automatically delete files from the
server; every week or two I go into my ISP's Web front end and delete
Trash from there.
BTW -- I'm running OS X 10.4.11 -- Mail may play different games in
different versions if anyone else is reading this.
