Doesn't help if you want to sync that to an iPod.

That should work for syncing.

On your iPod, go to Music -> Artist and scroll to the one that you want.

That's not a playlist, though. And on the iPod there's no way to sort
it.

True, but the OP never actually mentioned syncing to an iPod, and Smart
playlists covers that.

After selecting an artist, click on one of the songs, Select All, and
drag them to an empty space in the playlists pane. You'll get a new
playlist, usually with the artist's name, though sometimes it's named
"untitled playlist"; I haven't bothered to figure out why the latter
occurs.

That will happen if the name on all the selected tracks doesn't match.

I thought they *did* have the same artist, since I had selected an
artist in Browse mode and was therefore only dragging songs by that one
artist. But on further investigation, I found that some of the tracks
had him listed as the *album artist*, and someone else was listed as the
artist. They were from compilation albums.
I also found that it's not necessary to select the songs. In Browse
mode, you can just drag an artist, album, or genre from the browse pane
to the playlist pane, and it'll create a playlist of everything from
that artist/album/genre. If the songs are all from the same artist
and/or all from the same album, the playlist's name will be the name of
the artist and/or album.
