I don't want a label. Just  black instead of white text. Can I do
this? Is there a program?

AFAIK, there isn't.

Perhaps ShapeShifter can do this?:

Just curious: why do you want to make the text black?

Because I'm finding a white desktop screen more appealing and easier
on my eyes.

I can really follow you here. - I'm one of those who want to remove the
shadow on the desktop names and change the color to black (white in
reverse colormode)...

It isnot possible to neither change the color nor to remove the shadow
on desktop names...

And ShapeShifter doesn't work on 10.5.x on any Mac - or even on 10.4.9
and up on IntelMacs... Sad that the Unsanity people are so hmmm....
'lazy' here...

But it won't help with any kind of color changings anyway on names on
the desktop...

Maybe Silk from Unsanity will be a better suggestion. I haven't tried
the new Leopard compatible beta yet...

The OP didn't state which type of processor or which Mac OS version he's
running. However, here's what Unsanity says:
