"window server" bogging down

I have a Mac Mini running Tiger 10.4.11.  Over the past while the
system starts to bog down if I use YouTube or any other video website,
to the point of hanging Firefox for quite some time until I Force
Quit.

Rebooting FF does nothing, nor does clearing its cache.  The only
current solution is to reboot the entire machine.  When it starts to
bog down the fan spins up, showing that the system is working hard.
Opening Activity Monitor shows "Window Server" using up to 80% of the
CPU.

I've made no big changes to my system or added any big chunks of
software.  Any ideas as to how to remedy this are most welcome.

Thanks,
Mark

Does the console show any error messages when this happens? How much RAM
and available disk space do you have on your Mac? Do you have any other
applications open when this happens?

I'll check the console log next time this happens, so thanks for the
tip.

I only have 1/2 gig of RAM, but lots of disk space (50Gs internal on
80G drive, almost 1/2T external).  It will do this even with only
Firefox open.  I'm aware of how having other apps open can affect
things, but this has cropped up with me working in my usual manner,
without making any big changes software-wise (aside from usual System
updates).
