Hello,

my question is strange, but not banal:
the large side of the screen-size of my iBook G4 measures less than 29
cm.
So, today a large number of applications puts her symbols in the
menulet-bar (right upper side of menubar),  just that this place its
very small for me, and i must decide to keep the most important items
of all.
To return to my question, i ask if exists a way to disable the
Spotlight symbol, where takes the place of two icons, or to reduce the
space between Spotlight and the other menulet -items ??
Thanks,
its a crazy idea, i know, but,...

I found a MacOSXHints article that says how to get rid of it in Tiger,
but it doesn't work in Leopard.

If you're willing to do without Spotlight completely, this works:

sudo mv /System/Library/CoreServices/Spotlight.app /Applications
killall Spotlight
killall SystemUIServer

You can run Spotlight from the Applications folder manually, which will
put back the menu icon during that login session.

To undo it, do:

sudo mv /Applications/Spotlight.app /System/Library/CoreServices
killall SystemUIServer

It doesn't work for me anyway (Tiger 10.4.4), and i don't know how to
handle this:
mdutil -i off /Volume/<disk name>
(My terminal window is open...)

As I said, I found web sites that explain how to do it in Tiger, so you
should follow those instructions if that's what you're running..

My instructions are only for Leopard, since those instructions no longer
work.

Maybe this is not what you're looking for, but it will give access to
all your items. Works with Panther and Tiger (don't know about Leopard).

And also one that is easily addressed by a Google search for, say,
"remove spotlight from menu bar".

Except that the answers on all those sites doesn't work any more (if
you're running Leopard).

Thanks for all responses,
i use Quicksilver on Tiger, which is 100 times better than Spotlight-

iTunes, Textedit, and perhaps Preview.
