Yes, I have the same problem and I haven't been able to resolve it even
with erasing the disk.

I'd try resetting the Spotlight index on your source drive; it seems to
be a common theme when it comes to weird Time Machine crashes. Also,
Apple has requested Spotlight logs whenever I've reported Time Machine
problems.
Run this command in Terminal:
sudo mdutil -E /
You'll have to enter your password.

Worked OK for me. No idea if it will make any difference to Time
Machine, but the index appears to have been blown away. As a result, of
course, my disk read activity just went through the roof.

Yep. here too. however, it seems to fix itself on the next cycle. It
then backs up for several days, then gives that error again. Press OK,
and it backs up the next time.
Making me a little nervous...

I asked someone in the Apple Store if this was a common problem, and
he was unfamiliar with it. I probably should have stuck around for a
genius, but I have posted about it in
http://discussions.apple.com/index.jspa, without resolution. I don't
know if they are working on it.

Me too.

So what is going on here? I get the error every other time it tries to
automatically back up. I get no error on manual backups at all. Is this
a bug?

Certainly it's a bug.
Is it dangerous? I don't know.
Is Apple working on it? I don't know.

Not dangerous but annoying and certainly belies the usefulness of a
feature new to Mac software such as Time Machine.

I haven't done any systematic tests and this is little more than a guess
but it may have to do with the content of a file changing while TM is
trying to back it up.

I agree. Had a Workflow plugin in iCal set for the exact time that
Timemachine did it's hourly copy. When the 2 coincided I had that
TimeMachine error, The worfflow copied some files from 1 directory to
amother.
Changed timing and have not seen error message since.
