Looking for a freeware app that gives instantaneous and average up and
down speeds for a dsl connection in a small window.  Recommendations?

I use iPulse; does what you want and much more in a "small as you want"
window.

And if you view this speedtest.net mini widget in Safari, you can choose
File > Open in Dashboard to convert it to a true Dashboard widget in one
step.

Thanks to Michelle for reminding me where I saw that feature before!
My memory, these days, is like a sieve!   : )

Is this a Leopard trick? I don't see Open in Dashboard in my File menu.

Also, MenuMeters may be close to what you're looking for:

I'll second MenuMeters--simple, unobtrusive, always there, the basic
stats you want, easy graphical representation with instantaneous
transfer rates.

I tend to leave Activity Monitor running on the Network Activity
section. You can watch activity in real time and spot slow-downs
instantly. However, this is probably only useful if you are normally
just using your Internet access and not other network services
concurrently. (It aggregates all you network traffic so it wouldn't
distinguish between DSL Internet traffic from your Ethernet local
network for example.)

Bad idea. Activity Monitor spawns a process called pmTool while it's
running, which consumes quite a bit of CPU time on its own. You're
actually making your computer work harder, consume more energy, etc. by
leaving Activity Monitor running.

I see Activity Monitor using 1.2 percent and pmTool using 1.2 percent
... that's 2.4 percent of one of my processors ... if I need every ounce
of juice I can quit Activity Monitor but in my normal use I'm not short
of CPU cycles. Maybe I should put my electricity consumption meter on my
Mac to see if I can detect a difference.

Errm... 'Quite a bit of CPU time'? Are you sure? Activity Monitor on my
machine eats between 1.2 and 1.7% of CPU time, and pmtool another 1 to 1.2%.
3% of a single CPU ain't 'quite a bit'. Especially not when compared with
Mail (up to 45%) and Hogwasher (up to 48%) when they're downloading.

Okay, to be fair, "quite a bit" is a subjective term.  I tend to
scrutinize any process that increases CPU usage on a regular basis.
