[Help] VLC problem

Hello,
for some time VLC has failed to show the picture window on my iMac.
Sound is there but no picture, and I have a message :
"macosx: QT doesn't support any appropriate chroma"
This for VLC 0.8.6 a, c and h.
Strange is that
- QuickTime plays the movie (and hence does not seem to lack "chroma")
- I don't have that pb on my iBook

Both are G3 under OS X 10.3.9 and QT is 7.4.5.
Although QT works VLC has the advantage of using .srt subtitles,
sometimes useful.
I looked into VLC crash log, found nothing screaming, and into
Application Support on both machines for both QT and VLC, no difference.
Which probably means I did not look into the right place.

Does the above message mean anything to you and could you indicate what
I am missing ?

Thanks
HC

Start out by deleting things like the VLC preference file.    Unless you
have some oddball 3rd-party addons for QuickTime or the system on your
iMac, there's not much else you can do except keep looking for files or
configurations that are different on the two computers.

I did that, manually, then using the script now distributed with VLC. No
change.

Did that too, but there are so many files in OS X that it defies
complete understanding of all :-(
I also googled the message and it appears that quite a few people have
that pb, and others don't with seemingly same configurations. I will try
the recent QT 7.5 update but I doubt it will help, then return to 7.3
but I thonk I did that already once, to non avail.
Computing gets sometimes close to black magic.
