My friend has an Imac and wants to print cd labels. She bought some
label paper but needs a free or low cost cd label program. Could
anyone give me a recommendation? thanks in advance.

If she has a relatively current copy of Toast (either 8 or 9), it comes
with a "Roxio Version" of Disc Cover that will print the labels just
fine for most label stock (as well as printers that print directly to
CDs/DVDs). Older versions of Toast came with a "Roxio Version" of
Discus 3, which also works pretty well for a wide variety of label
stocks and direct CD printers.

You can download templates for MS Word from the Avery website.

She does not have Word, She has something called Pages.

Pages is Apple's word processing software, a part of iWorks.

It can open Word files so it may be possible to us it to open Avery's
templates.

I have just tried exactly that, downloading the Address Labels template
found at

ode=WEB01&softwarecode=12003>

Pages opens the file with no warnings, and the results look fine, though
I have yet to try the templates with some real Avery labels.

I tried using those templates with OpenOffice and I forget the details but
the bottom line was I didn't find them usable.  It was as if the templates
had macros in them or something.

How low is low?  Two of the more popular ones are DiscLabel and
DiscCover 2, both $35:

If she has Photoshop Elements, it can be used to print CD/DVD labels.  It's
not the easiest thing to do, but it can be done.

Topic drift:

I've been printing on Fellowes "NeatO" labels.  They are paper and don't work
well with DVDs.  It's my guess that the paper is a squosh to thick for many
DVD readers, especially in humid weather.

Avery makes a special label for DVDs; the labels are made of film instead of
paper.  I haven't found a Photoshop template for the Avery stock, and the
last time I checked the Avery software won't run under OS X 10.5.x.

Can anyone identify a film-type DVD label and software with a matching
template?

Why not start with the DVDs that come with a printable back to start
with? We have been producing DVDs for my daughter's HS band this way,
and they work just fine, many in regular printers that will take DVD/CDs
through their print tray. That way you also avoid the issue of off
center labels causing problems when spinning at high speed.

I also second the recommendation for Disk Cover and its predecessor
Discus. Unless you are into something really elaborate, these provide
plenty of options.

I also use printable DVD/CDs which makes the process of labeling so easy
both of my Epson ink jet printers can handle printing labels I've
designed with the Discus software.

William why do you call Discus the predecessor to Disk Cover, Discus is
very much still in business they have recently upgraded there software?

I think he was using "predecessor" in the sense of my earlier reply --
Discus RE preceded DiscCover RE as the labelling software bundled with
Toast.

As a side note, I was delighted to see that MagicMouse was able to
continue the Mac version of Discus. There was some concern that the p2
compiler for Modula-2 (the language in which Discus is written) might
not make it to MacIntel. The delight is two-fold: 1) Discus continues
and 2) I can still play with a Modula-2 compiler for some of my
personal projects.

Oh, I assumed it was a predecessor because it used to be bundled with
Toast v 8, and Disk Cover is now the label maker that comes with Toast
9. I stand corrected.

My Deskjet can't handle them.

There's an Epson for < $100 that prints to disc without issue.

That $100 is far less than the cost incurred when a label
peels off inside an expensive DVD or CD player...

Actually, there are quite a few Epsons that match the <$100 description
and print directly to CD/DVD. At least one of them (the R280) can
almost be considered "disposable" -- it does a great job, but is priced
somewhat oddly. I got mine for $48, including a full set of ink
cartridges, but the cheapest price I can find for the Epson Claria inks
it takes is $62 at Costco. (The generics, at least for this model, just
don't come close in quality.)

Last set of refills I got for my r260 was $42 shipped from eBay.

Genuine Epson Claria...
